Things I’ve learned while compiling this:

  • The city watch books are solid. Nothing in C and D tiers. Interestingly nothing in S either. Very solid stories and characters. Enjoyed every single one.
  • The witches are great but the books are just OK. Granny Weatherwax is one of my favourite characters, and some of the situations and exchanges with the other witches are hilarious. And yet, I found myself ranking each story on its own lower than I would have expected. Which makes me think, I should do a tier list of Discworld characters!
  • The first two books have company. The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic are easily the weakest in the series for me; Pratchett is still learning his craft at this stage and it shows. I was expecting these to be the only books to sit in the D-tier but, upon revisiting Hogfather, I couldn’t find a reason to put it anywhere else. Same with The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents. In fact, I had to refresh my memory of TAM because I couldn’t remember any of it! I could have sworn this was where the Wee Free Men first appear, which might have bumped it up into a D, but upon revisiting, I must be getting them confused with the rat clan. And sadly, Shepherd’s Crown just wasn’t finished.

Welcome to Glyphs & Graphs – my little corner of the internet.

I built this place with no grand mission, vision or master plan. It exists purely for my pleasure of writing, photographing, documenting and publishing. Some thoughts here are polished, others still forming – but all are shared in the spirit of curiosity and creative momentum.

You’re in a safe space from AI here. It’s been used on occasion, sparingly and thoughtfully, and will always be called out. So unless you see a comment otherwise, you can rest assured that you’re reading 100%, pure, organic, Yorkshire-bred me.
